The Olympics was never a very good idea.

What?
If they went back to the old rules where people competed naked then they could show them on the “adult” channels.
Or they could add interest by decreeing that every competitor who failed to win a medal would be fed to crocodiles.
Some people learned to swim during the centuries of the pagan Olympic Games, but there seems to be no record of anyone organizing races between swimmers, whether in natural waterways or in public baths. The Romans built monumental baths, but one wonders if the pools were deep enough to swim in, or long enough for swimming laps. Does anyone know?
Never mind laps, did the Romans build baths big enough for synchronized swimming?
Synchronized swimming is bad enough as a “sport”, but somehow it metastasized and started spreading to other events, like diving and trampoline. How long before we get to watch synchronized shot put? Or synchronized foot races?. Or synchronized boxing…?
The baths at Bath are just over 5 foot deep.

Track and Field only.
There were boxing and wrestling matches.
No, I meant that’s all they should be now. Sorry to be unclear.
In addition to boxing and wresting, they had pankration, which corresponded very closely to modern MMA.
No subjectively judged events, they just lead to corruption,. No separate female categories, only the best in every field. Lifetime ban for using performance enhancing drugs.
The events themselves are the least memorable thing about the Olympics.
I don’t know anything about who’s medaling. All I know is the outside drama: stuff like green swimming pools and corruption scandals and Tonya Harding.
Sod that. Just give me Justinian’s proportionate response to the Nika (pronounce it right, Boys) Riots!
Why? I think it’s awesome that so many people can show off their edge in sports.
It’s pricey, but as long as you never join the bidding process, you never face those costs.
Most sports have world championships in some form or other. The Olympics is just another layer – a very costly one. And during a pandemic, a very dumb one.
So some 13 year old Japanese girl won an Olympic gold medal for skate boarding. Whoopee.
Earlier I heard that the women’s artistic event was happening. I prepared myself for the splendor of competitive slashfic writing, but it turns out it’s gymnastics.
WKPD she say:
Theodosius also probably did not discontinue the ancient Olympic Games, whose last recorded celebration was in 393. Archeological evidence indicates that some games were still held after this date. Sofie Remijsen indicates there are several reasons to conclude the Olympic games continued after Theodosius I, and came to an end under Theodosius II, by accident, instead. There are two extant scholia on Lucian that connect the end of the games with a fire that burned down the temple of the Olympian Zeus during Theodosius II’s reign.
Perhaps instead of picking a prominent athlete to light the flame, they could be sacrificed?
After Naomi Osaka’s dismal performance in the tennis, I suspect she is going to be both.
What would improve it? Adding bionics to the mutants?
Off-topic, but here is the best Alfred E. Neuman lookalike I have ever seen:

Original Olympics required a Greek pedigree. Today, some of the athletes probably don’t even know who their father is.

I’ve not watched the Olympics since 2008. I heard the last winter Olympics were not so good either. Perhaps athletic performance in young people is declining for (put reason in here).
What’s wrong with the Olympics?
Dobzhansky? I could see him doing the hammer throw.
The Cheating and Corruption Games.
